Knife and Competition Specs for 2008

  • Senior Division: 18 and over
  • Junior Division: 13 to 17 years
  • Little Warriors: 6 to 12 years

 Senior Division

  • Senior Knife Specs: 50 Points
  • Single knife must be 37.5 inches long from tip of hook to end of handle Double knives must be 34 inches longSingle knife blade must be 14.5 inches longDouble knife blade must be 13 inches longFire wick for single must be 10 inches long and 2 inches wide
  • For doubles - must be 7.5 long and 1.5 wide

Junior and Little Warrior Division

  • Junior and Little Warriors must present proof of age
  • Junior and Little Warrior Knife Specs: 50 Points
  • Single knife must reach to the top of the hip
  • Double knives must reach to the top of the thigh
  • Fire wicks are to dancer's preference, but fire must last the duration of the performance
  • Knives MUST have hooks

Safety Regulations for ALL Divisions

  • Knives must be soaked and spun off in the marked areas only.
  • Junior and Little Warriors may have one person present to soak their knives under the supervision of a Fife Knife spotter. Soaking containers will be provided. No water bottles or any other such containers may be used. Gasoline may not be used - any dancer using gasoline will be eliminated
  • No contestant may hold fuel in their mouth for any reason - any dancer doing so will be eliminated.

Criteria for ALL Divisions

Technical: 100 Points

  • Vili tasi
  • Vili lua
  • Kakai in and kakai out over palm - both right and left hand
  • Toss up and catch in back
  • Toss in air (spin 2.5 times - six feet) catch in back
  • 2 under the leg throws
  • One around the neck motion
  • 3 kneeling motions
  • 3 laying motions
  • Hook doubles for 3 moves

Routine length: 50 Points

  • Senior and Junior Division: at least 6 minutes, no more than 8 minutes
  • Little Warriors: at least 5 minutes, no more than 7 minutes
  • Routines are timed from when the warrior begins spinning

Showmanship: 100 Points

  • Body movement and vigor
  • Entrance and exits Height of throws (High points) Difficulty of motions (High points)
  • Speed (High points)

Costume: 25 points

  • All competitors must wear printed Samoan lavalava, trimmed and cut modestly.
  • Must wear Samoan necklace of shells, leaves, or any Samoan material Anklets must be worn, Samoan materials only War paint is optional 15 points will be deducted for each drop
  • No warrior is to leave the stage at any time during his/her performance. This includes jumping down around the stage. There will be a 30 second break between singles and doubles, during which the dancer will remain onstage
